During the summer of 2008, Ruth traveled to Huanuco, Peru for the first time at the special request of the International Justice Mission to provide education on sexual assault evidence collection to community leaders in health care and law enforcement. Following In 2009, she returned to assist the district attorney in forming a child sexual abuse unit, and provide further education for forensic physicians to improve sexual assault exams.

In 2009 she returned with a team from The River Church Community in San Jose California to expand trainings for law enforcement, prosecutors, district attorneys, forensic physicians, social workers and educators in the area of child abuse and interpersonal violence. Our team included a retired detective, a teacher, a nurse, a minister and an interpreter. International Justice Mission partners with The River Church Community and Paz y Esperanza (Peace and Hope) in Peru.

In 2010 she brought Dr. Patricia Speck, Dr. Marion Donohoe and Dr. Margaret Hartig from the University of Tennessee to provide trainings on child sexual abuse examinations. They met with the President of the university in Huánuco and the Deans of the medical and nursing schools. As a result, the University of Tennessee will be providing ongoing trainings to the university in Huánuco through telehealth communication. Our goal is to train experts in medicine, nursing and law so the people of Huánuco can in turn train their own experts. We also provided trainings for forensic physicians, lawyers and social workers in Lima. View Photos from 2010 here!

Fundraising efforts for our 2011 trip are underway and those who want to be a part of this exciting work in Peru by giving monetary contributions are always welcome.

Our mission in 2011 is to continue trainings and encourage the amazing healthcare and legal professionals in Huánuco and Lima. They are passionate in their work as they strive to improve justice for women and children and are truly an inspiration.

Plans for Peru 2011 are very exciting. We are currently making arrangements to bring child sexual abuse experts with us to accelerate the trainings. More to come on this exciting collaborative effort to address child maltreatment in Huánuco, Peru. By the way, we are looking for interpreters to accompany us to Peru. The pace is exhilarating, but it is so important to share this information with healthcare professionals who can really make a difference addressing the medical and legal issues of our patients.
