Human Trafficking:
Healthcare’s Response To A Modern Form of Slavery
FHC Brochure in PDF Format: Health Professionals / Law Enforcement

Human trafficking is a modern-day form of slavery.
Here are a few important facts to consider:

  • Second largest and fastest growing criminal industry in the world

  • Approximately 600,000 to 800,000 victims are trafficked
    across international borders annually

  • Between 14,000 and 17,500 of those victims are trafficked
into the United States each year

  • More than half of these victims are children

This seminar will provide insight to this unique form of violence, the physical and psychological problems that result, and how Ohio and the nation are responding to this crisis. Identification of victims by healthcare professionals and law enforcement, and coordination of community services are imperative in providing safety and rescuing these victims.

Theresa Flores
Ms. Flores is a former human trafficking victim who was sexually exploited by a large underground criminal ring of men when she was only 15 years old. For two long years, she was coerced into debt bondage, all the while living in an upper class neighborhood in Detroit Michigan. During this time, she was manipulated, kidnapped, physically and sexually abuse, and she lost her freedom and her voice and became a modern day slave. Twenty five years later, she has regained her voice and written her story, The Sacred Bath. The book describes the horrific years she spent as a sex slave, the torture and the secret she carried with her daily. She has also written two poems entitled, “My Definition” and “The Many Faces of a Trafficking Victim”. Ms Flores now resides in Central Ohio and is the single mother of three beautiful children. Theresa has been a licensed Social Worker for nearly twenty years and received her Master’s in Counseling Education from University of Dayton as a Human Development Specialist.
